WestJet Airlines Ltd. (TSX: WJA) says it is banning marijuana use for staff in certain "safety-sensitive positions" even when they aren't at work.
The airline says it updated its alcohol and drug policy in preparation for the legalization of recreational cannabis use next week, and that it is following the lead of rival Air Canada (TSX: AC), which has also banned marijuana use for certain employees.
WestJet said employees were notified of the changes on Tuesday morning. Marijuana is being treated differently than alcohol, which is banned for certain staff members within 12 hours of coming to work.
WestJet's list of affected positions includes flight and cabin crew members, flight dispatchers, aircraft maintenance engineers and station attendants. The new WestJet policy also includes a prohibition on the possession or distribution of marijuana products on company property while on duty or attending a company social function.
Several Canadian law enforcement agencies have also banned the outright use of marijuana by staff members, even when they are not at work. Marijuana becomes legal nationwide in Canada on October 17.
