Freedom Mobile Offers Customers 100 GB Of Data A Month For $60

In a bid to attract more customers, Freedom Mobile is offering 100 gigabytes (GB) of extra data to new and existing customers once they sign up for a two-year plan with a new handset for $60 a month.

Freedom Mobile, which is the wireless arm of Shaw Communications Inc., (TSX:SJR.B) says the offer will be available for a limited time, but hasn't disclosed when it will end. Freedom Mobile says the bonus data pool won't expire, but will be automatically applied when a customer exceeds a qualifying plan's normal monthly limit.

Called the "Big Binge Bonus' promotion, the 100 GB promotion is Freedom Mobile's latest attempt to lure consumers away from Canada's national wireless carriers – Rogers, Bell and Telus. In October 2017, Freedom Mobile challenged the big three carriers by offering a plan with 10 gigabytes of data a month for $50 -- at the time a relatively large amount of data for that price.

The three national carriers responded by launching aggressive discounts and promotions in the weeks before the 2017 year-end holiday period, often the biggest selling opportunity of the year for Canadian mobile carriers.

Shaw shares approached noon hour ET Monday up 15 cents to $25.65.
