Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is cutting more jobs in Canada
The Detroit based automaker has announced that it is cutting 450 jobs at its Oakville, Ontario assembly plant, with the layoffs set to begin in February 2020. Ford confirmed Monday that it is ending production of its Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT models at the Oakville plant, resulting in the job losses.
In a news release, Ford said that it is putting its "focus on products in the heart of the fastest growing segments" of the market, notably sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. The latest round of layoffs in Oakville is in addition to 200 job cuts that Ford announced this past July.
Unifor Local 707 said that Ford has notified it that it plans to also eliminate one of three shifts in the plant's auto body shop and reduce assembly line speed. Layoff notices will be sent out to the most junior 450 employees at the Oakville facility in early November.
The models built at the Oakville plant have seen slumping sales in recent years, said Ford, which is in the process of readjusting all of its global operations.
