Following a bumpy launch earlier this week, the Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) reports that its new streaming service, Disney Plus, signed up more than 10 million subscribers on its first day of operation.
Disney's mix of Marvel and Star Wars movies, along with classic animated films and new series appears to be a hit with consumers. Disney says that it has invested billions of dollars into its streaming service, which costs $7 U.S. a month or $70 U.S. a year after a seven day free trial.
Disney didn't break down where the subscriptions came from or if they were free or paid monthly or yearly subscriptions. However, the first day figures far surpassed expectations inside the company and outside of it. Some analysts forecast that it would take Disney a year to reach 10 million subscribers. By comparison, Netflix has tallied 158 million subscribers since launching its streaming platform in 2007.
The Disney Plus streaming service encountered technical problems in many areas of Canada and the U.S. earlier this week. But those issues appear to be largely resolved now.
