The European Commission said on Wednesday it had sealed a deal with Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) and BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) for the supply of up to 300 million doses of their Covid-19 vaccine candidate.
The move follows Pfizer’s announcement on Monday that its experimental vaccine developed with BioNTech was more than 90% effective, making them the first drug makers to show successful interim data from a large-scale clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine.
Under the E.U. deal, the 27 E.U. countries could buy 200 million doses, and have an option to purchase another 100 million.
The E.U. has already signed supply deals with AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN), Sanofi (NASDAQ:SNY) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) for their experimental Covid-19 shots, and is talking with Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA), CureVac (NASDAQ:CVAC) and Novavax (NASDAQ:NVAX) to secure their vaccines.
Wednesday, Pfizer announced positive top-line results from the Phase 3 JADE REGIMEN study. This 52-week study investigated abrocitinib, an investigational oral once-daily Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor, in patients 12 and older with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD) following response to initial open label induction treatment with abrocitinib 200mg.
Patients were randomized into one of three arms: 200mg, 100mg, or placebo. Both doses of abrocitinib met the primary endpoint, resulting in significantly fewer patients experiencing a loss of response requiring rescue treatment, or "flaring," compared to those randomized to placebo. Both doses also met the key secondary endpoint of a larger percentage of patients maintaining an Investigator’s Global Assessment (IGA) response of clear or almost clear relative to placebo.
PFE shares doffed 49 cents, or 1.3%, to $38.19, while those for BioNTech fell $3.26, or 2.9%, to $109.50.
