Google To Sell Maps Data To Solar Companies

Alphabet (GOOGL), the parent company of Google, is planning to license its maps data to solar companies and other organizations focused on renewable energy.

Alphabet said it hopes to generate up to $100 million U.S. from the map licenses over the next year, with sales accelerating moving forward.

The company plans to sell access to new application programming interfaces (APIs) with solar and energy information, as well as air quality data.

The new offerings from Google Maps will include data that can be used by solar panel installers, as well as solar design companies.

Alphabet also sees opportunities with real estate companies and utilities moving forward.

The company is also expanding a solar savings calculator that allows homeowners to enter their address and receive estimated electricity bill savings from using solar power.

The solar savings calculator also offers three-dimensional (3D) modeling of the roofs of buildings and nearby trees based on Google Maps data. Alphabet says it currently has data for more than 350 million buildings.

The focus on renewable energy comes as Alphabet tries to monetize its maps products amid mounting pressure to produce new revenue streams at the technology giant.

Alphabet’s stock has risen 20% over the last 12 months and currently trades at $131.01 U.S. per share.
