Microsoft To Build $10 Billion A.I. Data Centre Hub In Portugal

American technology giant Microsoft (MSFT) plans to spend $10 billion U.S. on a new artificial intelligence (A.I.) data centre hub in Portugal.

The new data centre campus will be situated in the port city of Sines and will take several years to construct, according to Microsoft.

The Microsoft project is ?one of the largest A.I. investment projects announced to date in Europe.

Seattle-based Microsoft says it plans to deploy 12,600 Nvidia (NVDA) Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) at the data centre in Sines, Portugal, about 150 km south of Lisbon.

Portugal has large investment projects in the works that aim to produce green energy ?to power energy-intensive A.I. data centres and other technologies.

Portugal's position on the Atlantic ocean makes it a prime location for subsea cables that connect Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Investments ?in A.I. data centres are surging as companies such as Microsoft shift their ?operations to the cloud and integrate A.I. applications and models into their businesses.

MSFT stock has risen 21% this year to trade at $506 U.S. per share.
