Nintendo Scores Another Hit With NES Mini

It’s likely one of the hottest presents under the Christmas tree this year will be a reboot of some old technology.

Fresh after dominating headlines from the release of Pokemon Go, Nintendo (OTC:NTDOY) followed it up by announcing it would come out with an updated version of the its oldest console.

The NES Mini is scheduled to hit stores in November, just in time for the holiday season. It will come pre-loaded with 30 of the console’s most memorable games-- including Super Mario Brothers 1, 2, and 3, both Legend of Zelda games, and favorites like Mega Man 2, Metroid, and Dr. Mario.

The system will also come with an HDMI cable to easily connect it to televisions as well as one USB controller, an exact replica of the original controller. Additional controllers will be available for purchase for $9.99.

The system will have a few limitations. It won’t be able to play old NES cartridges, nor will users be able to download any additional games. But at a price tag of $59.99, it’s likely buyers will be able to overlook these limitations.

This latest news is another example of Nintendo getting innovative monetizing its old content library. The initial response has led people to speculate the company will release similar products with other systems.

Nintendo shares killed it this week, rising close to 50% to $32.81 U.S. in mid-day Friday trading. Shares haven’t been this high since 2011.
