Never settling to give Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) the majority of the market share for tablets, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will release an update to the Surface tablet. Version 5 will come out next month at the end of October. The keynote is scheduled for October 31.
Microsoft could release an LTE version of the Surface tablet. This would give the device greater traction in the business space, where users require a mobile connection on a telco’s network. Though the tablet keeps the software giant relevant in devices, the company’s bread and butter is still cloud solutions.
Office 365 is still a big cash generator for Microsoft. The product suits users regardless of the operating system and device they are using. It works on Macs, iPads, Windows, and Apple iPhones. OneDrive is a successful file management tool that keeps an end-user’s data in sync across all devices.
Even though software makes up most of the revenue, Microsoft’s updates to Surface 5 and SurfaceBook are still notable. The company sets up a trend and a frame by which other hardware makers may follow. By setting up guidelines for hardware that works best on Windows 10, Microsoft builds its user base and improves adoption for its operating system. That should keep investors tuned in to the Surface launch event.
