Elon Musk has launched a new competitor to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia.
Musk, who is the CEO of electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA) and social media site X/Twitter, calls his new artificial intelligence-powered (A.I.) encyclopedia ‘Grokipedia.’
The name comes from Musk’s xAI large language model known as “Grok” and is being promoted as an improved and less biased version of the free, web-based Wikipedia.
Musk said the idea for a Wikipedia rival came from David Sacks, who is currently serving as U.S. President Donald Trump’s A.I. and cryptocurrency czar.
Musk, who has endorsed Germany’s right wing extremist party AfD, has called Wikipedia “woke” and criticized it for citing news sources such as The New York Times and National Public Radio.
Elon Musk is promoting Grokipedia as an “anti-woke” and unbiased alternative to A.I. competitors such as ChatGPT.
Critics say this is the latest example of conservatives trying to rewrite history and bend facts to suit their ideology and worldview.
The Grokipedia.com page currently has about 885,000 articles, which appear to be written in a style reminiscent of Wikipedia.
For its part, Wikipedia currently has more than seven million articles on its English-language site. Wikipedia is also written and edited by humans, while Grokipedia is solely generated by A.I.
Management at Wikipedia say that alternative sites have appeared before and haven’t interfered with its work or mission.
When asked about accusations of bias, Wikipedia says that its stie is written to inform billions of readers without promoting a particular point of view and that it has transparent policies.
Wikipedia’s stock is privately held and does not trade on a public exchange.
