Canadian Wireless Carriers Experiencing Outages, Dropped Calls

Some of Canada’s largest cell phone companies are experiencing outages that are causing dropped calls and other voice network problems nationwide.

Rogers (TSX:RCI.B), one of the country’s biggest wireless carriers, said on its website that "some customers may be intermittently experiencing dropped calls or are unable to place or receive calls on their mobile phone or wireless home phone service."

Text messages, internet and data services have been operational, but voice services have been impacted intermittently, said Rogers. Similarly, Freedom Mobile, owned by Shaw Communications (T.SJR.B), also said it experienced similar outages, and the problems are not yet fully resolved.

The outages have also affected 911 calls, with some emergency responders reporting dropped calls and an inability to get through when placing or responding to calls. Police advised people to use another service to call 911 in case of an emergency.

Telus (TSX:T), another national wireless carrier, said some of its customers may have issues calling customers on other networks, but calls to other Telus customers should be fine. Bell also said the problems originated on other networks, but any Bell customers calling into another network would likely experience problems.
