Asia falls on Fed fears


Asian stocks fell, with the benchmark index poised for its lowest close in four weeks, following a retreat in U.S. equities on concern about the pace of U.S. Federal Reserve interest-rate increases.

The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo gained 39.63 points, or 0.3%, to 15,788.78.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index tumbled 485.09 points, or 1.9%, to 24,705.36

Sumitomo Metal Mining dropped 3.8% after nickel tumbled yesterday.

China Vanke Co., the nation’s largest developer, slid 2.7% amid reports that the number of homes sold in China last week slumped.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which assembles Apple Inc. products, lost 1%in Taipei after the world’s most valuable company unveiled new iPhones and other devices.

Fortescue Metals Group Ltd., Australia’s third-largest iron ore producer, fell 2.7%.

Apple suppliers declined after the U.S. technology company unveiled a smartwatch and iPhones with bigger screens and payment applications.

Japan Display Inc., which makes panels for Apple devices, dropped 1.8% in Tokyo. Apple shares rallied as much as 4.8% yesterday before closing 0.4% lower.

CHINA

Shanghai’s CSI 300 index lost 12.79 points, or 0.5%, to 2,432.43.

Chinese developers dropped after Credit Suisse Group AG said primary property market sales volume fell 35% last week from the previous period. China Vanke lost 2.7%, while China Resources Land Ltd. sank 4.8%.

Sands China Ltd. decreased 2.3% amid a slump for casino operators after Nomura Holdings Inc. predicted Macau gaming revenue will fall this month. Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. fell 2.8%

China Shenhua Energy Co. sank 3.2% to lead coal producers lower as Prime Minister Li Keqiang was quoted by the official Xinhua news agency as saying the government will "declare war" on pollution. China Coal Energy Co. slipped 2.1%.

Markets in Korea remained shuttered for holiday

The Taiex index in Taiwan fell back 77.16 points, or 0.8%, to 9,357.61

In Singapore, the Straits Times STI Index dipped 4.33 points, or 0.1%, to 3,338.63

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 dropped 7.04 points, or 0.1%, to 5,236.66

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 subtracted 33.62 points, or 0.6%, to 5,574.28
