Give Your Loved Ones These 3 Practical Christmas Gifts

There’s a great deal of pressure to come up with the perfect Christmas present. We want the special people in our lives to light up when unwrapping their gifts. Many people feel a source of pride over this ability.

Like anyone, I like getting a wonderful gift. The problem is as an adult with a reasonable amount of disposable income, I usually just go out and buy something when I want it. This puts my wife and other gift givers in a tough spot.

So I usually urge them to keep it simple and stick to necessities. I can always use more socks and underwear.

Gift cards are a great gift for anyone. Yes, I know they’re impersonal, but I have yet to meet someone disappointed by a $50 gift card to their favorite store. Even a Wal-Mart or grocery store gift card will eventually get used.

I’ve started giving more and more cash as gifts, especially to kids. They get enough toys on Christmas that cash is novel and exciting. I usually accompany the gift with an equal contribution to an RESP so I know that the kid gets to spend it on something fun.

And finally, I’ve found the perfect thing to get that stubborn someone on your list that has everything -- a home-cooked meal. I have yet to find someone that doesn’t appreciate it when you volunteer to cook one of their favorite dishes.

The holiday season tends to be pretty stressful. Don’t let finding the perfect gift add to your worries. Give something simple and practical instead.
