Save Money and Still Keep Fit Ditching The Gym Membership

They say sitting is the new smoking. As we lead more sedentary lifestyles, it has become more and more important to make an effort to stay active.

It’s something that’ll likely pay off in the long run. Fit people have fewer medical problems, which leads to a better standard of life and fewer medical bills as they age.

So we join a gym, often at the cost of $50 or even $100 per month. It’s silly to pay that much, especially when so many free alternatives exist.

A easy choice is team sports. Just about every community has all sorts of different drop-in leagues that have less focus on competition and more emphasis on fun. Soccer is popular everywhere, but there are also touch football, floor hockey, softball, or tennis leagues that cost little to nothing.

If you’d prefer working out alone, there are still plenty of options. Going to the park to do yoga is free, and finding a private spot isn’t hard. Walking and jogging are also easy choices. And depending on where you live, hiking is another very viable option.

You don’t need a gym to do weight training, either. Push-ups are a great workout, as are a myriad of others that use your own body weight as resistance. And if you find yourself really missing weights, a used set can often be purchased for the cost of a couple of hundred dollars.

Working out doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s that simple.
