3 Easy Ways to Save Money on Halloween

Halloween will soon be upon us. Here’s how you can still have all the fun without breaking your budget.

Innovative costumes

Each year I’m horrified to see at least one of my friends spend hundreds of dollars on some intricate costume. It gets worn once and then tossed to the back of the closet, never to be heard from again.

It’s easy to make a decent costume using supplies you have around the house. Thrift stores are also filled with cheap clothes and other things that won’t break the bank. Besides, nobody is going to remember anyway.

Be smart with candy

The easiest way to save money giving out candy is to shut your lights off and refuse to answer the door. But that’s no fun.

Kids aren’t going to care what they get, as long as it’s unhealthy. So shop around. Places like bulk foods stores or dollar stores should yield much better deals than supermarkets or big box stores. Know your prices and pounce when you find a good buy.

Now’s the time to buy pumpkins

I was talking to a friend who runs the produce department at a grocery store. He told me the next few days are the best time to buy pumpkins.

Stores don’t want to be stuck with them after Halloween, so they’re reduced about a week before the big day. But it’s also likely stores will run out over the weekend, so the next few days is the sweet spot.
