Is Apple (AAPL) Building a Waterproof iPhone?

Over the past five years, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has managed to dominate the smartphone market by continuing to innovate. And the company is continuing in that direction.

According to a report in the International Business Times, Apple could be possibly building a waterproof iPhone. The report cites a patent, which suggests that the company is experimenting with waterproofing features. The patent, filed back in July 2014, describes how a standard headphone jack could have an umbrella section. This section could potentially prevent internal damage to the device.

There have been rumors that Apple is considering water-proofing the iPhone device. And the patent is likely to become part of the iPhone if Apple decides to do so.

Apple also has a second patent, which could potentially lead to EarPods that have the ability to cancel noise through an integrated accelerometer and a bone conduction process, according to the International Business Times. The patent has been spotted by AppleInsider.

Apple’s shares, meanwhile, continue to have a disappointing year. Year-to-date, Apple shares are down almost 8%, underperforming the NASDAQ Composite Index, which has fallen just a little over 1.80% in the same period. Apple is down some 30% from its 52-week high.
