The Green Pastures of Public HotSpots Worth Billions to WiFi Tech Developers

Availability of public WiFi is growing at an incredible pace, with the number of public locations projected to hit 542 million by 2021. The growth has provided ample opportunity for tech developers and marketers alike, as consumers gain more and more access to the internet wherever they go.

Capitalizing on the spread of public WiFi are the developers of secure, and reliable WiFi tech for large-scale userbases including Edgewater Wireless Systems (TSX.V: YFI) (OTC: KPIFF), Boingo Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIFI), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: MRVL) and NETGEAR, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTGR).

A recent report from Research and Markets projected a significantly high growth rate for the North American WiFi Hotspot market, alone—pegging it at 14.2% CAGR during the forecast period (2017-2023).

Among the companies jostling for position among these public spaces are junior tech developers, Edgewater Wireless Systems (TSX.V: YFI) (OTC: KPIFF). Edgewater recently announced a significant deal with The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) to enhance the chain’s in-store infrastructure powered by Edgewater’s WiFi3TM technology.

Edgewater’s proprietary WiFi3 system is designed to facilitate safe and secure WiFi service to high-density network locations such as stadiums and airports.

However, their developments are also starting to draw the attention of major providers in North America and in Asia, as demands on systems in particular to handle devices and infrastructure with internet-of-things (IoT) capabilities rise.

As the overall demand on WiFi strengths and capabilities grows, look for the market to rely heavily on the sector’s best developers like Edgewater Wireless Systems (TSX.V: YFI) (OTC: KPIFF), Boingo Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIFI), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: MRVL) and NETGEAR, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTGR).

PUBLIC ACCESS PROSPERITY

Each week, more public spaces welcome open and accessible WiFi connectivity for patrons.

Based on a recently released report from Research and Markets, the Global WiFi hotspot market has been conservatively estimated to reach $4.9 billion by 2023, at a market growth of 16.8% CAGR during the forecast period—and a CAGR of 14.2% in North America.

Global Industry Analysts pegged the market to be much higher, with a projection for outdoor WiFi reaching $37.7 billion by 2020.

But it’s easy to see the growth taking place, with every new space that opens or expands for users.

In London’s Tube network, a pilot program was recently launched to collect depersonalized WiFi data across the network in order to reduce crowding and prioritize areas for investment. So not only are commuters being provided reliable connectivity, but their usage is helping to inform the administrators of the system to direct their focus and investment.

In some ways, WiFi infrastructure in Smart Cities is being used to better monitor public works, such as water—even when water isn’t yet connected.

Delivering upon these major system demands will require all hands on deck from the WiFi tech sector, whether it’s from router developers such as Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: MRVL) and NETGEAR, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTGR), or connectivity and network specialists Edgewater Wireless Systems (TSX.V: YFI) (OTC: KPIFF), Boingo Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIFI), and Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO).

Marvell recently announced the development of a blueprint to combine 5G and the latest WiFi technologies.

NETGEAR is working on a partnership with leading cybersecurity specialists Bitdefender to bring comprehensive IoT security to the company’s 500 million users worldwide.

Boingo added yet another international airport to its portfolio of public spaces, by signing a deal with the Hawaii Department of Transportation Airports Division.

Cisco deployed its Intent-Based Networking infrastructure into a leading Swiss hospital, in order to provide a safe and reliable network for doctors, nurses, patients and hospital operations to share info on site.

But the biggest WiFi rollout news of late was that of Edgewater Wireless Systems collaborating with The Kroger Co. to enhance its in-store infrastructure and the shopping experiences of its customers.

WIFI3TM FROM EDGEWATER WIRELESS TAKING HIGH-DENSITY TO NEW LEVELS

As an IoT and WiFi innovator, Edgewater Wireless Systems is leading the way in WiFi connectivity solutions. The company specializes in designing and patenting Wi-Fi solutions for high-density environments—Such as airports, convention centers, stadiums and other public spaces requiring broad access to Wi-Fi.

So far, Edgewater has spent approximately $60 million on its technological breakthroughs—including on their patented WiFi3tm technology that’s used in multiple products including in Aeratm brand connection point devices.

When designing WiFi3tm, Edgewater targeting a solution for the three main issues which impact Wi-Fi performance: Capacity, Density, and Interference.

Already, Edgewater has deployed the world’s first stadium network powered by WiFi3, in Holland’s Wagener Stadium.

Another recent development from Edgewater came with the late November announcement of that it had developed the world’s first antenna solution specifically for multi-channel WiFi products.—The internalized multi-channel antenna can easily be integrated into any series of WiFi3tm powered OEM wireless products.

All of these breakthroughs are moving Edgewater to the forefront of the capabilities for WiFi, which will be necessary not only for high-density connectivity spaces, but for IoT reliability as well.

Now with the Kroger partnership, a stadium deal, and several other patented breakthroughs in its portfolio, Edgewater is well positioned to make significant gains in 2018—as it works to close the gap with its much larger comparables such as Boingo Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIFI), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO), Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ: MRVL) and NETGEAR, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTGR).
