Asia Swoons Over Trump Health-Care Failure

Asia markets were mostly lower amid rising doubts over U.S. President Donald Trump's ability to pass legislative reforms after Republican leaders pulled a bill to overhaul the U.S. health care system.

The Nikkei 225 in Japan tumbled 276.94 points, or 1.4%, to 18,985.59, as risk-off sentiment prompted a rush to safe haven bids such as the yen.

The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong deleted 164.57 points, or 0.7%, to 24,193.70

Shares of Toshiba tumbled 2% to 26,885 yen per stock after local media reports that Toshiba's U.S. subsidiary Westinghouse may file bankruptcy on Tuesday and seek support from Korea Electric Power.

Chinese property developer Kaisa Group shares soared 58.3% to HK$2.47, as the stock resumed trading on Monday after a two-year suspension.

On Sunday, a Beijing-backed civil servant Carrie Lam was chosen to be Hong Kong's next chief executive, in what has been called a "small circle election."

The majority of the special administration's 7.3 million people did not have the chance to vote, as the leader was chosen among several candidates by a 1,194-person election committee.

Australian markets fell, weighed by their materials sub-index which fell 1.5%.

Australian miner South32 said Monday morning that it would buy back $500 million U.S. of its shares. Shares of the South32 sold off 1.8% to A$2.67.

BHP Billiton dropped 2.7%, after the Escondida copper mine strike in Chile left the Australian miner with a loss of about $1 billion U.S. and in a weaker negotiation position

South Korean markets were also negative, after South Korean prosecutors said they will seek a detention warrant for ousted President Park Geun-hye, who has been accused of taking bribes from big businesses.

Against the U.S. dollar, the yen was weaker at 110.24, falling below the 111 levels seen last Friday, and the Australian dollar remained steady at $0.7627.

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 slumped 11.56 points, or 0.3%, to 3,478.04

The Kospi Index in Korea dropped 13.29 points, or 0.6%, to 2,155.66

In Taiwan, the Taiex dipped 26.21 points, or 0.3%, to 9,876.77

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index fell 16.02 points, or 0.5%, to 3,126.88

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 removed 11.12 points, or 0.2%, to 7,062.71

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 retreated 6.85 points, or 0.1%, to 5,746.70
