Futures Improve Tuesday

Bombardier, Imperial in Focus

Futures for stocks in Canada’s largest market pointed to a slightly higher start on Tuesday.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index jumped 63.66 points to end Monday at 15,730.79. June futures edged up 0.1% Tuesday morning.

The Canadian dollar squeezed up 0.02 cents at 75.08 cents U.S. early Tuesday.

Bombardier said its board of directors approved a proposal to slash Executive Chairman Pierre Beaudoin's pay by $1.4 million, bringing his 2016 compensation to $3.8 million, equal to his remuneration for 2015.

Barclays cut the target price on Imperial Oil to $48.00 from $50.00

National Bank Financial raised the target price on Transalta Renewables to $15.00 from $14.50

The TSX Venture Exchange nicked up 0.77 points Monday to 825.04

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a marginally lower open on Tuesday as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrives in Moscow amid tensions over Syria.

Ahead of the opening bell, futures for the Dow Jones Industrials lost 10 points, or 0.1%, to 20,588. Futures for the S&P 500 slipped 2.5 points, or 0.1%, to 2,350. NASDAQ futures fell 3.75 points, or 0.1%, to 5,418.50

On the data front, the NFIB small business optimism index slipped to 104.7 in March from 105.3 in February. The JOLTS (job openings and labour turnover) data are also due at 10 am ET.

Tillerson has been mandated by foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G-7) major industrialized nations to put pressure on Russia to break ties with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Tillerson said Tuesday the U.S. will stand up against anyone who commits crimes against humanity.

European stocks inched up by noon on the continent, while the Nikkei 225 in Japan receded 0.3%, and the CSI 300 in Shanghai improved 0.3%.

Oil prices gave back four cents to $53.04 U.S. per barrel.

Gold prices marched ahead $6.30 to $1,260.20 U.S. an ounce.
