Why Microgrids Could be the Next Big Opportunity in Energy Markets

Over the next few years, the global microgrid market could be worth up to $26 billion, according to Global Market Insights. That’s thanks in part to rising demand for “clean energy, increasing instances of cyberattacks on the energy infrastructures, growing requirement for reliable and secure global power supply, and rising global deployment of microgrids for rural electrification,” as noted by Research and Markets. Helping to fuel momentum, the U.S. Congress’ recently passed pandemic relief bill, which includes the Energy Act of 2020, offers funding for microgrids, energy storage, and for renewable energy. “This bipartisan package will foster innovation across the board on a range of technologies that are critical to our energy and national security, our long-term economic competitiveness, and the protection of our environment,” Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources chairman said. That could be a strong catalyst for companies such as CleanSpark, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLSK), Riot Blockchain Inc. (NASDAQ:RIOT), Marathon Patent Group (NASDAQ:MARA), Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), and Enphase Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:ENPH).

CleanSpark, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLSK) BREAKING NEWS: CleanSpark, Inc., an advanced software and controls technology solutions company focused on solving modern energy challenges, and Bay Area Energy Solutions, Inc. today announced they are jointly developing the first pilot microgrid solution for an estate residence in Healdsburg, CA. The companies are pleased to have secured the first contract under a previously announced partnership agreement.

This initial project is anticipated to be the first of a joint initiative formed with a number of domestic energy developers, including Bay Area Energy Solutions. Luxury and estate homes offer a targeted niche with unique requirements for which CleanSpark and its partners can provide strategic solutions. Properties of this size often require significant power for one or more building structures and can even include business operations on site. There are thousands of homes greater than 10,000 square feet in the state of California alone, where incentives and tax benefits, along with well-documented utility challenges support the implementation of new, renewable, and resilient energy sources. CleanSpark expects to develop a significant pipeline of projects within this sector.

The first deployment is a 14,000 square foot estate currently under construction. When completed, the luxury residence will be operated fully grid-disconnected, utilizing on site generation, solar, and storage managed by CleanSpark’s mPulse Controller for system optimization. The goal of the project is to provide self-sufficient off-grid energy for locations frequently experiencing grid disruptions from events including wildfires and public safety grid shutdowns. The California Energy Commission anticipates increasing volatility in areas prone to disruptions.

Kilowatt Labs, Inc.’s supercapacitor-based energy storage which will be installed with photovoltaic solar panels during the first phase of the project in order to power construction of the home. Additional solar and stand-by generators will be added once the homeowner takes residence.

Amer Tadayon CRO of CleanSpark commented, “We are seeing increasing investments being made by estate homeowners integrating sustainable energy technology into construction projects of this magnitude, and we believe this trend will continue. This is the first foray directly into this market segment for CleanSpark. With our development partners, we can help solve critical energy and resiliency challenges for these types of residences.” Adding, “We are pleased to continue building our pipeline of microgrid projects with partners like Bay Area Energy Solutions, where we expect to deploy multiple mPulse controlled residential microgrids in 2021.”

Joel Ware, owner of Bay Area Energy Solutions said, “Because this is an off-grid project, we worked with a number of energy providers including Kilowatt Labs to procure the proper electrical generation and storage for the construction phase, as well as the permanent occupancy of the home. CleanSpark’s Controller will enable our customer to power their home and property efficiently, with self-sufficient, sustainable energy that is not reliant on the increasingly volatile utility grid.”

Zach Bradford CEO of CleanSpark said of the project, “We are excited to participate on this project with Bay Area Energy. CleanSpark’s proprietary mPulse system, paired with solar, storage, and generators will provide complete resiliency as well as significant cost savings. It will also allow their microgrid to be ‘future-proof’ should they wish to add additional solar or other resources at a later date. We believe that the sustainable energy management opportunities presented within the higher end residential real estate market will parallel the successes we’ve begun to experience in our Bitcoin mining operations.”

Riot Blockchain Inc. (NASDAQ:RIOT) announces an expected 65% increase in bitcoin mining hash rate capacity resulting from the purchase and future deployment of 15,000 S19 Pro and S19j Pro Antminers from Bitmain Technologies Limited. The approximate $35 million purchase is comprised of 3,000 S19 Pro Antminers (110 TH) and 12,000 S19j Pro Antminers (100 TH). These additional miners are scheduled for receipt and deployment starting in May 2021 and continuing through October 2021. This new order of miners, combined with the Company’s prior miner purchases, is expected to significantly increase Riot’s estimated bitcoin mining hash rate from the previously announced 2.3 EH/s to 3.8 EH/s.   The Company has been receiving and deploying new miners consistently through 2020, including this new purchase; the delivery schedule continues into the fourth quarter of 2021.

Marathon Patent Group Inc. (NASDAQ:MARA) and DMG Blockchain Solutions Inc. have entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding to form Digital Currency Miners of North America, which will be a U.S.-based non-profit entity whose mission is to create a better mining environment for North American miners, to help improve their financial performance, and to create North America’s first cooperative mining pool. Marathon Patent Group and DMG’s U.S. subsidiary, Blockseer, are working together to establish DCMNA, a non-profit entity focused on North American digital currency opportunities, including decentralizing the Bitcoin hashrate and providing more transparency for North American miners. DCMNA’s principal initiative is to create North America’s first cooperative mining pool by licensing Blockseer’s mining pool to all DCMNA members in a cooperative structure. Mining partners who are members will receive rebates based on the hash rate they contribute to the overall pool, thus improving the mining profitability of DCMNA members.

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) just reported that, “In 2020, we produced and delivered half a million vehicles, in line with our most recent guidance. In addition, Model Y production in Shanghai has begun, with deliveries expected to begin shortly. Our net income and cash flow results will be announced along with the rest of our financial performance when we announce Q4 earnings. Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5% or more. Tesla vehicle deliveries represent only one measure of the company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on a variety of factors, including the cost of sales, foreign exchange movements and mix of directly leased vehicles.”

Enphase Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:ENPH), a global energy management technology company and the world’s leading supplier of microinverter-based solar-plus-storage systems, announced the expansion of the Company’s long-term relationship with Sunnova Energy International Inc. to include Enphase Encharge storage systems. As a power service provider, Sunnova will empower its network of solar dealers in the U.S. to provide a simple upgrade path for existing Enphase homeowners as well as homeowners who are new to solar and storage. “Homeowners are now more than ever using their homes for both daily living and as a place for work,” said William J. (John) Berger, Chief Executive Officer of Sunnova. “Our goal in partnership with Enphase is to deliver energy resilience and independence to homeowners, and our long-standing collaboration with Enphase means that our dealers can quickly deploy Enphase Encharge storage systems to new customers as well as to our large installed base of Enphase solar-powered homes.”
