On an adjusted basis, earnings turned around to profit from last year, beating market projections. For the third quarter, the company projects sequentially flat paper shipments. The Montreal-based company's second-quarter net earnings were $31 million U.S. or $0.71 U.S. per share, down from $48 million U.S. or $1.12 U.S. per share for the second quarter of 2009. Domtar Corp. (T.UFS) shares were $4.31 at $59.83.

Adjusted earnings for the second quarter were $61.7 million or $1.06 per share, up from $49.7 million or $0.86 per share in 2009. Revenues rose to $844.0 million, from $688.1 million in the year ago quarter, primarily due to the recording of revenues associated with the lease of the first and second units of ATCO Power's Karratha generating plant in the first and second quarters, respectively, of 2010. Revenues also increased due to higher prices in the Alberta electricity market. ATCO Ltd. (T.ACO.X) shares were up $0.17 at $50.43.

Revenues for the second quarter of 2010 were $152.2 million U.S. versus $104.3 million U.S. during the same period one year ago. The company said the second-quarter 2010 revenue reflects a 10% increase in ounces sold and a 33% increase in realized gold price in the period. Centerra Gold Inc. (T.CG) shares were down $0.04 at $13.08.

The net loss before specific items was $43.9 million or $0.11 per share, compared to a net loss of $25.6 million or $0.06 per share in the previous quarter. Revenues for the quarter decreased to $299.4 million from $300.7 million in the prior-year quarter. Catalyst Paper Corp. (T.CTL) shares were down $0.005 at $0.15.

The year-over-year increase in earnings arose primarily from significant net investment gains of $388.7 million in the second quarter of 2010.
