A majority of Canadians say federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau is doing a “poor or very poor job,” according to a new poll by public opinion research firm Nanos.
The survey of Canadians was conducted for CTV News and comes following Minister Morneau’s blind trust controversy, and revelations that prominent Canadian companies and individuals are stashing millions of dollars in offshore tax havens to avoid paying Canadian taxes.
A thousand Canadians were polled by Nanos and asked what they thought of the job Bill Morneau is doing as Finance Minister. According to the results, the majority of Canadians say that the Finance Minister has done a “poor or very poor job” than those who say he’s done a “good, or very good job.”
One in three -- 34 per cent -- of Canadians surveyed said Minister Morneau has done a “poor or very poor job,” while one in four -- 25 per cent -- say he’s doing “a good or very good job.” Another 32 per cent of people surveyed said he’s done an “average job,” and nine per cent were “unsure.”
“You look at this number, with 25 per cent giving a very good or good score, you have to realize that the Liberals are in the high 30s, which means that not even all Liberals think that he is doing a good job,” said Nik Nanos, Chair of Nanos Research.
The latest Nanos federal ballot tracking had the Liberals at 36.6 per cent support nationally. Nanos said that typically people who support a party will also support that party’s leaders, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with Minister Morneau.
“He is trailing the party in terms of score on a net-positive basis, so that’s not great for the Finance Minister,” said Mr. Nanos.
When you further break down the results, among people who graded the Finance Minister favourably, only six per cent said he's doing a “very good job,” and 19 per cent say he’s doing “a good job.” In contrast, nearly double the number of Canadians (16 per cent) said he’s doing “a very bad job,” and 18 per cent said he’s doing “a bad job.”
