Canadian Men Twice As Likely To Use Cannabis As Women: Survey

A Statistics Canada survey has found that Canadian men are twice as likely to use cannabis as women.

New data from the “National Cannabis Survey” shows that 16% of Canadians over age 15 reported using cannabis between the start of April and the end of June. That's down slightly from 17.5% in the first three months of 2019.

Almost five million Canadians consumed cannabis in some form during the three-month period. One quarter of men (25%) and 16% of women reported that they plan to consume it in the next three months. The survey suggests that men are more likely to use cannabis daily or weekly than women and are also more likely to use it for non-medicinal purposes.

Additionally, about four in 10 cannabis users (40%) said they bought cannabis illegally on the black market. Smoking the drug remains the most common way of consuming it, with 68% of men and 62% of women consumers choosing this method.

At 14%, women were almost three times more likely than men (5%) to have consumed cannabis through alternative methods such as edibles and topical variants. Recreational marijuana became legal in Canada in October 2018 and Statistics Canada is now tracking consumption habits every three months.
