Manitoba And Ottawa Reach $6.7 Billion Healthcare Deal

The Government of Manitoba has reached a healthcare deal with the federal government in Ottawa valued at $6.7 billion.

Manitoba has become the sixth province to sign a new healthcare accord, following Ontario and all of the Atlantic provinces.

The Government of Manitoba has signed an agreement that would see increased funding and a commitment to target specific areas and share data with Ottawa.

Much of the details in the deal between Manitoba and the federal government still need to be worked out, according to both sides.

However, the agreement will see more than $6.7 billion in extra federal money put into Manitoba's provincial healthcare system over 10 years, most of which will be through increased transfer payments.

Canada’s provinces are required to come up with specific plans showing how they would spend the money and how they would prove to Canadians that their healthcare systems are improving.

The agreements with the provinces are a first step to completing a 10-year, $196 billion healthcare funding accord that the federal government previously announced.
