Canada’s Federal Budget To Be Delivered On April 16

Canada’s federal government in Ottawa plans to deliver its latest budget on April 16.

Federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will present the Liberal government's federal budget in Parliament next month.

In a news release, Minister Freeland’s office said that the budget will focus on the cost-of-living issues that remain a priority for Canadians, including housing, consumer prices, and jobs.

The budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year comes at a time when high interest rates are slowing Canada’s economy and curtailing the federal government’s finances.

While the Liberal government is sure to unveil new spending measures in the budget, Minister Freeland vowed last fall that the budget deficit would not get any bigger than previous forecasts.

The latest data from the Finance Department showed that the federal government’s budget deficit stood at $23.60 billion for the first nine months of its current 2023-24 fiscal year, up 329% from $5.50 billion during the same period a year earlier.

Ottawa’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31.
