Asia ends hard week on down note

Asia markets saw broad declines on the final trading day of the week, following a tumble overnight on Wall Street.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell another 191.9 points, or 0.8%, to 22,783.72 The Japanese yen largely held on to gains, at 114.31 against the U.S. dollar

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index dipped another 51.3 points, or 0.2%, to 26,572.27, with computer maker Lenovo's stock dropping by 15.1%.

Korean markets hesitated, as shares of heavyweight Samsung Electronics ended largely flat despite earlier saying that its third-quarter operating profit was likely to have risen to a record high.

Australian bourses found a way up to end the week, with the energy sector also higher by 0.2% Oil and gas explorer Beach Energy, which had earlier announced the sale of a 40% stake in its Victorian Otway gas assets and trimmed its earnings guidance for fiscal year 2019, saw its stock fall by 3.7%

The shares of electronic parts maker TDK dropped by 4.8% on Friday, while component supplier Murata Manufacturing declined by 3.9%. Lens maker Largan Precision was among those who saw the largest percentage declines, dropping 7.3%

CHINA

China's markets are closed for the Golden Week holidays.

Shares of Apple suppliers saw broad declines on the back of a report by Bloomberg BusinessWeek claiming that Chinese spy chips may have been present in hardware used by Amazon Web Services and Apple. The report alleged that the chips could have been introduced by a Chinese server company called Super Micro. Both companies have disputed the report.

In an address at Washington's Hudson Institute, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence accused China of "malign influence and interference," saying that the country was waging a sophisticated effort to sway the elections against the Republicans in retaliation for President Donald Trump's trade policies

In other markets

In Singapore, the Straits Times STI index dumped 21.8 points, or 0.7%, to 3,209.79

In Korea, the Kospi index lost 6.97 points, or 0.3%, to 2,247.49

In Taiwan, the Taiex index stumbled 201.79 points, or 1.9%, to 10,517.12

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 slid 42.31 points, or 0.5%, to 9,214.87

In Australia, the ASX 200 gained 9.19 points, or 0.2%, to 6,185.48
