Hong Kong Suspends Trade After Typhoon

Stocks in the Asia-Pacific region were mostly higher, as traders observed how a natural disaster affected Hong Kong.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 43.09 points, or 0.2%, to 23,601.78.

Shares of Apple suppliers in Asia-Pacific were mostly higher on Tuesday.

In Japan, shares of Murata Manufacturing gained 3.9% while Taiyo Yuden added 3.9%.

The moves were watched after Apple’s stock stateside soared on Monday. The Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to reveal its new iPhone lineup this week.

The Japanese yen traded 105.38 per U.S. dollar after strengthening from levels around 105.6 against the greenback yesterday.
Trading in Hong Kong was suspended on Tuesday due to Typhoon Nangka.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing announced Tuesday that trading in the securities and derivatives markets, including after-hours futures trading, have been cancelled for the full day due to the typhoon.

Elsewhere, South Korea’s LG Display jumped 1.6%. Over in Taiwan, however, Largan Precision dropped 3.9%.

Shares of Australian coal miners were mixed on Tuesday, after Australia said it’s investigating media reports that China has stopped taking coal shipments from the country. China is the largest importer of Australian coal.

By their Tuesday market close, shares of Whitehaven Coal rose 0.5%. New Hope Corporation, on the other hand, plummeted 7.3%. South32 also slipped 1.4%. Major miner BHP also saw its stock decline 0.4%.

The Australian dollar was at $0.7177, still above levels below $0.715 seen last week.

CHINA

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 picked up 16.04 points, or 0.3%, to 4,839.20.

China’s exports and imports of goods hit a record in yuan-denominated terms in September.

In U.S. dollar terms, China’s exports rose 9.9% in September as compared to a year ago. That was close to expectations of a 10% year-on-year increase by analysts.

In other markets

In Korea, the Kospi index fell 0.58 points to 2,403.15.

In Taiwan, the Taiex Index slumped 8.78 points, or 0.1%, to 12,947.13.

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index recovered 15.23 points, or 0.6%, to 2,567.65.

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 added 96.96 points, or 0.8%, to 12,453.85.

In Australia, the ASX 200 jumped 63.78 points, or 1%, to 6,195.75.
