Hong Kong Drops Ahead of U.S. Fed Meeting

Shares in the Asia-Pacific declined Monday as investors looked ahead to a Fed meeting and U.S. inflation data this week.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 declined 58.68 points, or 0.2%, to 27,842.33.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng tumbled 437.29 points, or 2.2%, to 19,463.63

CHINA

In Shanghai, the CSI 300 settled 44.8 points, or 1.1%, to 3,953.44.

Saudi Arabia is unlikely to accept Chinese yuan as payment for crude exports any time soon and any changes would be “more of a gradual process,” UBS Global Wealth Management said.

Moreover, China reports it may scrap quarantine requirements for Hong Kong residents traveling to the mainland before Lunar New Year next month as part of the latest slew of reopening measures, South China Morning Post reported.

In other markets

In Taiwan, the Taiex dropped 92.84 points, or 0.6%, to 14,612.59

In Korea, the Kospi index lost 16.02 points, or 0.7%, to 2,373.02.

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index slid 6.31 points, or 0.2%, to 3,239.66.

In Australia, the ASX 200 faltered 32.35 points, or 0.5%, to 7,180.83.

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 dragged 89.58 points, or 0.8%, to 11,506.45.
