Progress for Futures Wednesday

Suncor in Focus

Futures tracking Canada's main stock index rose on Wednesday as precious metals extended their gains, while oil prices climbed amid simmering tensions in the Middle East after the U.S. shot down an Iranian drone.

The TSX soared 204.72 points to close Tuesday at 32,388.60.

March futures hiked 0.5% Wednesday.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.09 cents to 73.23 cents U.S.

Suncor Energy beat fourth-quarter profit estimates on Tuesday as higher production helped offset the impact of weak commodity prices.

The TSX Venture Exchange vaulted 22.05 points, or 2.1%, to 1,052.72.

ON WALLSTREET

S&P 500 futures nudged higher on Wednesday after traders’ rotation out of tech names dragged the broad market index to a losing session.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials zoomed 122 points, or 0.3%, to 49,472.

Futures for the broader index took on 14.5 points, or 0.2%, at 6,956.25.

Futures for the NASDAQ turned lower 15.75 points, or 0.1%, to 25,436.25.

In premarket trading, shares of Advanced Micro Devices dropped 9% after its first-quarter forecast underwhelmed some analysts.

Chipotle shares were also under pressure, falling nearly 6% after the restaurant chain reported falling traffic for the fourth straight quarter and projected flat same-store sales growth for 2026.

Investors on Wednesday will be watching labor data as ADP will release its monthly look at private payroll growth for January. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect the report to show an increase of 45,000 jobs, compared to the 41,000 reported for December. The release generally precedes the Bureau of Labor Statistics report on nonfarm payrolls, but that won’t be out this week due to the partial government shutdown.

A busy earnings week is underway, with Alphabet slated to report results on Wednesday and Amazon due Thursday.

Markets in Japan slid 0.8% Wednesday, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong eked up 0.1%.

Oil prices powered ahead 22 cents to $63.45 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices gained $149.00 to $5,084 U.S an ounce.
