TSX Ends in Positive Territory

Amazon, Apple, Microsoft Rate Attention

Stocks in Canada’s largest centre took on strength by the closing bell on Tuesday, led mostly by tech and telecom shares.

The TSX surged 181.56 points to end the session at 35,749.70.

The Canadian dollar edged up 0.08 cents to 70.87 cents U.S.

Tech firms and real estate companies, including Celestica and TFI International, beat second-quarter adjusted earnings estimates amid a lineup of results by other companies late on Monday.

Celestica closed Tuesday ahead $42.65, or 9.5%, to $492.14, while TFI spiked $4.22, or 2.1%, to $210.04.

Focus is also on fresh corporate earnings, with multiple miners and energy firms, including First Quantum, Cardinal Energy, set to report quarterly results after the bell.

First Quantum shares lost 94 cents, or 2.5%, to $37.46, while Cardinal shares let go of 16 cents, or 1.4%, to $11.04.

Brookfield has raised around $2 billion from strategic anchor investors, including Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, for a private equity fund that will invest in companies in the kingdom and wider Middle East.

Brookfield gained 54 cents to $59.95.

Metals stocks took it on the chin. Aya Gold & Silver gave back $1.60, or 5.5%, $27.44, while Lithium Americas ditched 20 cents, or 4.9%, to $3.91.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange subtracted 20.67 points, or 2.3% to end Tuesday afternoon at 867.06.

Eight of the 12 TSX subgroups were positive, with information technology surging 4.7%, while consumer staples and telecoms each captured 2.1%,

The four laggards were gold, slipping 2.1%, materials, settling 2.8%, and energy, off 1%.

ON WALLSTREET

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied on Tuesday, buoyed by strong earnings, falling oil prices and a rotation out semiconductors into other parts of the market.

The 30-stock index popped 537.45 points, or 1%, to 52,747.53. Sherwin-Williams rose 8% on the back of better-than-expected results for Q2 to lead the benchmark higher. Fellow Dow member Coca-Cola also gained nearly 5% following an earnings beat.

The S&P 500 climbed 16.04 points to 7,429.22

The NASDAQ Composite closed in the red 55.17 points to 24,876.91.

Tech earnings remain top of mind for investors this week, as traders await results from Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms and Microsoft.

Prices for the 10-year Treasury gained ground, lowering yields to 4.60% from Monday’s 4.65%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices subsided $3.68 to $78.93 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices declined $50.50 to $4,026.50 U.S. an ounce.
