Futures Hike Following Trade Deal

Bombardier, Barrick in Focus

Futures for stocks in Canada’s biggest centre rose on Thursday as the U.S. and China signed their Phase-One trade deal, relieving market jitters after the 18-month trade conflict.

The TSX Composite Index gained 62.27 points to conclude Wednesday at 17,415.17.

March futures progressed 0.2% early Thursday.

The Canadian dollar nicked up 0.01 cents to 76.69 cents U.S. early Thursday.

Bombardier said on Thursday it expects full-year results to be lower than previously forecast, hurt partly by challenging rail projects.

Magna International on Thursday said it expects lower vehicle sales in 2020, hurt by a stronger dollar, the sale of its fluid pressure and controls business and lower light-vehicle output in Europe.

Barrick Gold said on Thursday it expects fourth-quarter gold production to be higher than the third quarter, benefiting from strong output from its Turquoise Ridge gold mine in Nevada.

On the economic slate, the Canadian Real Estate Association said MLS sales edged down by 0.9% in December. This ended a streak of monthly gains that began last March. Activity is currently about 18% above the six-year low reached in February 2019 but ends the year about 7% below the heights recorded in 2016 and 2017

U.S. stock index futures rose on Thursday after Morgan Stanley reported quarterly figures that easily topped analyst expectations while investors digested a key trade agreement between China and the U.S.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrials advanced 77 points, or 0.3%, early Thursday to 28,106.

Futures for the S&P 500 gained 10.5 points, or 0.3%, at 3,304.25.

Futures for the NASDAQ Composite hiked 35.75 points, or 0.4%, to 9,095.75.

Morgan Stanley’s three main businesses — investment management, wealth management and trading — all produced more revenue than expected in the previous quarter. The company’s stock rose 1.6% in the pre-market.

Around 7% of S&P 500 companies have reported earnings thus far. Of those companies, 76.5% have posted better-than-expected expectations.

Stocks closed well off their session highs on Wednesday after President Donald Trump and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He signed a "phase-one”"trade deal in Washington, D.C. Under the agreement, China is set to buy an additional $200 billion in U.S. goods over the next two years.

The data calendar is quite crowded with weekly jobless claims, monthly retail sales and import prices, and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing numbers due at 8:30 a.m. ET. Business inventories data and a National Association of Home Builders survey are also expected at 10 a.m. ET.

Overseas, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 nosed up 0.1% Thursday, while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index gained 0.4%

Oil prices dipped 10 cents to $57.71 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices gathered $2.30 to $1,556.30 U.S. an ounce.
