This unique operation of Benny's Bodega relies on community partnership with no government funding and is specifically designed for working families, so they can extend their finances. Each customer is provided with a bodega key card when they register. This key card is like a discount card from a supermarket. Customers must "check in" by providing current proof of employment and ID. Benny's Bodega has a system that tracks the frequency of use and demographic info. This provides structure and accountability. Benny's Bodega is a new and innovative solution to the ever-increasing need, of people working full-time but not making enough to meet their basic needs. Benjamin "Benny" Davey is the founder of Benny's Bodega, and a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with a master's degree in social work (MSW). Davey operates a small private practice, It Starts Today, LLC while maintaining full-time employment with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency.
