Coastal GasLink Fined For Sediment In Pipelines

Coastal Gaslink has been fined a third time for having sediment in its natural gas pipelines that run across British Columbia.

The B.C. government issued a bulletin saying that it fined Coastal GasLink $213,600 for “continued deficiencies with erosion and sediment control measures.”

The bulletin said that the company’s recurring issues with erosion and sediment control have resulted in ongoing compliance and enforcement actions.

The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office says more than 50 inspections have been done along the company’s pipeline route since the project started in 2019, resulting in 37 warnings and two other financial penalties: $72,500 in February 2022 and $170,100 in May 2022.

Coastal Gaslink’s pipeline network is in its final year of construction and will connect natural gas facilities in northeastern B.C. to the LNG terminal in Kitimat on the province’s north coast.

Coastal Gaslink is owned by TC Energy (TRP), whose stock has fallen 11% over the last 12 months to $57.55 per share.
