The new science-fiction film “Nope” from director Jordan Peele topped the North American box
office with a $44 million U.S. haul over the weekend.
Those ticket sales were slightly below industry expectations for $50 million U.S. and fall in
between the results of Peele’s first two films, 2017’s “Get Out,” which opened to $33 million
U.S., and 2019’s “Us,” which opened to $71 million U.S.
“Nope” is the highest opening weekend gross for an original film (not a franchise, sequel, or
remake) since Jordan Peele’s film “Us” debuted three years ago.
Other films that continue to perform strongly at the domestic box office include “Thor: Love and
Thunder,” which finished the weekend in second place with $22.1 million U.S., bringing its
domestic total to $276.2 million U.S.
“Minions: The Rise of Gru” took third place at the North American box office, earning $17.7
million U.S. and bringing its total to $297.8 million U.S. and $640.2 million U.S. worldwide.
“Top Gun: Maverick” earned $10 million U.S. in its ninth weekend of release, bringing its
domestic tally to $635 million U.S. The sequel starring Tom Cruise has now taken in nearly $1.3
billion U.S. globally.
