Elon Musk Announces New A.I. Company

Tesla (TSLA) chief executive officer (CEO) Elon Musk has announced a new artificial intelligence (A.I.) company called xAI.

Musk said in a statement that xAI aims to “understand the true nature of the universe,” but provided no other details about the company.

More information about xAI will be shared during a live Twitter Spaces discussion planned for July 14. Musk also owns social media platform Twitter.

However, xAI has reportedly assembled a team of leading A.I. thinkers from other companies, including Alphabet (GOOGL), OpenAI, and Microsoft (MSFT).

There is media speculation that Musk is positioning xAI to compete with companies such as OpenAI and Alphabet that have developed popular chatbots such as ChatGPT and Bard.

One of xAI’s advisors is Dan Hendrycks, executive director of the Center for A.I. Safety, a nonprofit organization that published a letter earlier this year signed by Musk and other technology leaders claiming that “mitigating the risk of extinction from A.I. should be a global priority…”

Musk reportedly incorporated xAI in Nevada this past spring. On its website, xAI says that it will “work closely with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission.”
