Melinda Gates Receives $1.5 Billion U.S. Of Canadian National Railway Stock

Melinda Gates is now one of the largest shareholders of Canadian National Railway (TSX:CNR)

Cascade Investment, a holding company that Bill Gates created with the proceeds of Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock sales and dividends, transferred securities worth $1.8 billion U.S. to Melinda Gates, a day after the pair announced that they are divorcing after 27 years of marriage.

Melinda Gates now owns 14.1 million shares of Canadian National worth $1.5 billion U.S., according to a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing dated May 3.

Cascade Investment also transferred 2.94 million shares of AutoNation (NYSE:AN) stock worth $309 million U.S. to Melinda Gates. Through the investment firm, Bill Gates has interests in real estate, energy and hospitality as well as stakes in dozens of public companies, including Deere & Co. (NYSE:DE) and Republic Services Inc.(NYSE:RSG)

Bill and Melinda Gates are also among the largest landowners in America. Bill Gates is currently worth $145 billion U.S. and is listed as the fourth richest person in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
