Netflix (NFLX) May Allow Users To Download Videos

Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), a streaming media service, may soon allow its users to download videos from its site. According to an article published in Fortune, the Los Gatos, California-based company is apparently adding a new feature that may allow temporary downloads.

Dan Taitz, COO at Penthera, told Fortune that NFLX is likely to jump into the downloads market. Penthera sells software to streaming video providers that allows viewers to download content. Taitz told Fortune that he has been hearing from industry sources that NFLX is all but likely to allow downloading of videos.

According to Fortune, Taitz is in a position to know what Netflix is up to since his company has worked with the likes of ComcastCMCSA, Starz and Charter CHTR. While Taitz’s sources include content providers and cable TV operators, he did not specify which industry insiders provided him information on NFLX’s plans to allow downloads. However, he did note that he has been hearing about it from a wide range of companies.

Netflix is a pioneer in the streaming service business, however, it has lagged many of its competitors in downloads. It will be interesting to see if NFLX catches up with its competitors.
