Rogers Internet Service Restored After Nationwide Outage

Rogers Communications (RCI) has restored mobile and internet service for most of its
customers across Canada after a nationwide outage negatively impacted individuals and
businesses, and caused problems for emergency and banking services.

The Toronto-based telecommunications company says some customers may still experience
delays as its cross-Canada network comes back online. Rogers said on social media over the
weekend that its technical staff are working to ensure that remaining customers impacted by the
outage are back online as fast as possible.

Tony Staffieri, chief executive officer (CEO) of Rogers, has apologized for the national service
interruption but has offered no explanation for the outage. The company has also refused to say
exactly how many customers were affected by the national internet disruption.

The service disruption comes as Rogers is trying to gain regulatory approval for its proposed
$26 billion acquisition of Shaw Communications (SJR), a deal that some industry analysts say
may now be in jeopardy.

Federal Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne is scheduled to meet Staffieri and
executives from other major telecommunications companies to “discuss how important it is to
improve the reliability of the networks across Canada.”
