Google parent company Alphabet (GOOGL) is adding new artificial intelligence (A.I.) features to its popular Gmail service.
The new features being added to Google’s email include A.I.-generated summaries of message threads, according to the company.
In a blog post, Alphabet said, “When you open an email with dozens of replies, Gmail synthesizes the entire conversation into a concise summary of key points.”
Going forward, A.I. overviews of emails will appear at the top of Gmail inboxes. Another new feature is “suggested replies,” which uses a person’s past emails to create one-click responses.
Previously, Alphabet unveiled A.I. enhancements to Gmail that allowed users to search messages, draft emails with prompts, and improve grammar.
The latest upgrades come as Alphabet cascades its Gemini A.I. technology across its portfolio of consumer products.
The technology giant is counting on its massive customer base to provide an advantage as the company takes on competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft (MSFT).
Alphabet says that its Gmail service has more than three billion users worldwide.
The new A.I. enhancements will be rolled out in phases, and some features will be turned on automatically. Users who don’t want them will have to opt out, said Alphabet.
GOOGL stock has risen 66% over the last 12 months to trade at $321.98 U.S. per share.
