When OpenAI led the chatbot market in 2022, investors would have undoubtedly said that its IPO was the investment. The AI market has changed dramatically since then.
Alphabet’s Google (GOOG) integrated Gemini AI into Google Search, along with many of its products. Microsoft’s (MSFT) CoPilot, which relied on OpenAI, faced substantial competition. Microsoft had to add support for Anthropic (ANTHRO) and other AIs to Copilot.
Although OpenAI reported strong revenue, losses are growing faster. The firm also needs to rely on hardware lending from firms like NVIDIA (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), and Oracle (ORCL). It is also indirectly borrowing from SoftBank (SFTBY). This month, SoftBank used its OpenAI stake to borrow $10 billion.
Anthropic’s major advancements in AI are putting OpenAI further behind. Its latest AI may carry out cyberattacks on websites. In the second quarter, the firm said that revenue jumped by at least 14-fold Y/Y.
The preliminary revenue topped over $11.5 billion, up from $787 million last year. It had positive adjusted operating income, compared to OpenAI’s quarterly losses.
The strong growth suggests that Anthropic’s IPO could fetch a valuation topping that of SpaceX (SPCX) at $2 trillion.
Your Takeaway
Weak performance for OpenAI’s IPO would set back its backers. The biggest investors include Amazon (AMZN) and NVIDIA. Anthropic’s investors include Amazon and Alphabet.
