Apple's $1,999 iPhone: Blockbuster or Bust

Ahead of Apple’s (AAPL) device announcement event, rumors circulated that Apple would hike prices for its iPhone Max and Pro Max. The firm increased prices by $100, below the $200 that the media expected.

The iPhone Duo is a foldable device launch under newly promoted CEO John Ternus. The phone has a 7.6-inch display and is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It is 80% bigger than the Pro. Consumers have two colors to choose from: start white and Night Sky.
The two batteries offer a practical advantage of 31 hours of video playback on the inner display. The outer display has 44 hours of battery life. At $1,999, consumers get 256GB of storage. The 2TB will cost $3,199 (or around $5,000 in Canada).

Blockbuster or Bust

Investors might predict that the Duo is an instant blockbuster. Years after Samsung (SSNLF) launched several iterations of a Galaxy Fold, Apple might offer unique features. In software, that includes AI functionality.

In this economic environment, Apple has a moderate risk that the Duo is a bust, at least initially. Inflation is running higher than the Fed would like, while rising oil prices add to rising total inflation.

A rally in memory stocks like SK Hynix (SKHY) suggests that Apple will face higher costs for iPhones. That puts pressure on its profits.

AAPL stock might trade in a range for the next few weeks. Investors will need Apple to report growth in iPhone revenue before they add to their position.
