Disney / Pixar Film Incredibles 2 Smashes Box Office Records With $180 Mln Debut

The Disney / Pixar film Incredibles 2 smashed box office records in its opening weekend, earning an estimated $180 million domestically at movie theatres in the U.S. and Canada.

Incredibles 2’s debut was so strong that it not only broke the previous opening weekend record for an animated film but had one of the top ten opening weekends of all-time for a film in any genre. Internationally, Incredibles 2 earned an additional $51.5 million to bring its total earnings over its first weekend of release to $231.5 million (domestic and foreign box office combined).

The previous opening weekend record for an animated film was set two years ago by Finding Dory, which opened with a $135 million domestic haul. On top of that, Incredibles 2’s opening weekend is the eighth largest all-time, topping the $179.1 million opening for 2016's Captain America: Civil War, which went on to gross over $400 million at the domestic box office.

Incredibles 2 is expected to have a solid box office run as the film earned an A+ CinemaScore from moviegoers who were polled when leaving the theatre. An opening of this size suggest that Incredibles 2 could earn more than $500 million domestically. Finding Dory ended its domestic box office run with cumulative earnings of $486.2 million.

In terms of international openings, Incredibles 2 delivered the largest Disney / Pixar opening weekend in several markets including Mexico ($12.3 million), Australia ($7.7 million) and Argentina ($3 million) along with a $5.4 million opening in Russia, which is also hosting the World Cup.
