Why Google and Apple Just Aren’t That Popular Anymore

A recent poll found that tech giants Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are just not as popular as they once were. Harris Poll has conducted the survey annually since 1999 in an effort to gauge the reputation of corporate brands. In its latest edition, Apple had dropped from fifth place a year ago, all the way to 29th. Google saw a similar drop, going from eighth place last year to the 28th spot this year.

The top rank this year belongs to Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), which was there last year as well. Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) jumped from ninth to third as investors continue to be excited about the developments the company has been making in self-driving trucks and automobiles, even despite the delays in delivery.

Although it may seem like it, this isn’t a poll of just tech stocks, but normally consumers have the most admiration for companies that are innovating and staying ahead of competition. That’s likely why we’ve seen Google and Apple both drop down this list. Both companies have simply not been able to keep up with their peers anymore.

In just the past year, we’ve seen Amazon acquire Whole Foods and launch a store with no cashiers or checkout lanes, and the company is now looking at offering checking accounts as well. We just haven’t seen the same level of innovation from Apple and Google. In the case of Apple, the company just seems content with making minor changes to its iPhone for the sake of having a new model available for its annual subscribers.
