Apple Recalls Nearly 500,000 MacBook Pro Laptops Over Fire Risk

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is recalling 26,000 MacBook Pro laptop computers in Canada over possible fire hazards.

In a news release, Apple said the recall is primarily for 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops that were sold between September 2015 and February 2017. The battery on the recalled computers can overheat and pose a fire risk.

To date, there has only been one known occurrence in Canada of a MacBook Pro catching fire and no injuries resulted, said Apple. In the U.S., there have been 26 reports of fires, including five reports of minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The recalled computers have a 15.4-inch (diagonal) display, 2.2-2.5 GHz processors, 256 GB-1 TB solid state storage, two Thunderbolt two ports, two USB three ports and one HDMI port. Only laptops with certain serial numbers are affected by the recall. Consumers can find out if their computer is impacted by checking the Apple website.

The news release states that 26,000 of the defective computers were sold in Canada and approximately 432,000 were sold in the U.S.
