E-commerce giant Amazon (AMZN) has announced plans to hire 6,000 additional workers in Canada as it prepares to hold its latest Prime Day sales event on October 10 and 11.
The new hires in Canada will include full-time, part-time, and temporary seasonal workers, according to the company.
The workers will be involved in picking, packing, and shipping customer orders as Amazon prepares for its latest Prime Day sales event and the busy year-end holiday shopping season.
Amazon also said that it is raising the pay of workers in Canada at its fulfillment centres and across its transportation fleet, taking their average hourly wage up to $21 from $17 previously.
Amazon currently operates 60 logistics centres across Canada.
Beyond Canada, Amazon said it plans to hire 250,000 employees across its global operations as it prepares for the year-end holidays.
That represents 100,000 more workers than were hired in the final quarter of last year and counters perceptions that the U.S. economy is slowing, and consumers are spending less.
Amazon’s Prime Day events, which are held twice each year, help to boost the company’s revenue.
The last event held this past July generated more than $12 billion U.S. in sales, making it the most successful Prime Day ever for Amazon.
Amazon’s stock has increased 13% over the last 12 months to trade at $137.63 U.S. per share.
