Netflix Releases Viewing Statistics For First Time

For the first time in its 26-year history, Netflix (NFLX) has made public detailed statistics about what its streaming subscribers are watching.

The world’s largest streaming service with more than 250 million subscribers globally has revealed the viewership statistics on nearly all of the shows and movies on its platform.

Calling the public report “What We Watched,” the data ranks almost all of its shows and movies by the number of hours viewed over the past six months.

Going forward, Netflix said that it will release updated viewership reports every six months.

The move follows the recent labour agreements reached with Hollywood writers and actors, who have called for greater transparency from streaming companies such as Netflix.

Over the past year, Netflix has launched an advertising tier that also demands heightened transparency as brands want information about how often shows and movies are watched.

The newly released data shows that “The Night Agent,” a Netflix original action thriller, was the service’s most-viewed show over the past six months with 812 million viewing hours.

“The Mother,” starring Jennifer Lopez, was the streaming service’s most watched movie. Other popular titles on Netflix include “The Glory,” “Outer Banks” and “Ginny & Georgia.”

Between January and June of this year, 55% of Netflix viewing came from original titles and 45% from licensed programs and movies, said the company.

Netflix’s stock has gained 57% in 2023 and currently trades at $463 U.S. per share.
