Netflix (NFLX) Adds HDR Video Streaming Support On Galaxy Note 8

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) has added Galaxy Note 8 to the list of HDR-compatible devices as it moves to target a much wider audience on the mobile front. The smartphone which is slated for release on September 8, 2017, will become the fourth phone to support the high-quality playback video capability. LG V30, Sony’s Xperia XZ1, and XZ Premium are the other phones currently supporting the feature.

Note 8-Netflix HDR10 Support

However, only Netflix subscribers with a top tier 4K streaming plan will be able to watch HDR content on the new phone. The addition of Note 8 is part of the streaming giants push to keep people locked on the network, while on the go. The move has also been necessitated by the fact that most original shows are now coming in 4K selection.

HDR video support is designed to offer life-like pictures with better contrast ratios and color accuracy for video. Currently there are five major HDR formats. Samsung first began to support HDR content in its devices and TVs last year with Note 7. However, Netflix has not added support for Galaxy S8 and S8+ given that the two don’t support HDR10 standards that it uses.

iPhone HDR Support

Netflix is adding HDR support for big name handsets as part of an effort that seeks to strengthen its consumer base. In a business where competition is the order of the day, staying innovative in terms of enhancing consumer experience is always a sure way of staying ahead of the pack.

It now waits to be seen if the streaming giant will add HDR support for iPhones given that a good chunk of its users use iOS devices. iPhone 8 which is slated for release before the end of the year is expected to come with HDR display support perfect for handling Netflix HDR content.
Netflix was up by 0.02% in Friday’s trading session to end the week at $174.74 a share.
